Most people have a smartphone and most people could point to examples of what a good app is. Instagram ought to be a good app: It has a massive user base and clearly ample resources to design an app that is as user-friendly as it could be.
But an IoT commissioning app based on similar design principles would be a disaster. Instagram relies on icons and gestures, the meaning of which users are expected to be familiar with.
First and foremost, commissioning apps need to be effective tools, easy to use for the occasional user and effective at scale – their appeal should be secondary. A poor commissioning experience makes or breaks otherwise great products.
