It might seem a tad theoretical to think about the difference between data and insight, but it’s an important distinction in the world of IoT. Plenty of sensors produce plenty of data, but is this data telling us something that we don’t already know, and that we’re actually interested in?

A receptionist might see that the air quality in a meeting room is poor at a point in time. A facilities manager might see that a building was sparsely occupied on a given day.

Going from data to insight means anticipating the needs of the consumer of the data, and presenting it in such a way that the insight becomes accessible without deep analysis – which most consumers are not willing to do. And unless that insight is actionable, [there is still little that will be done with it] → it still serves little purpose.
